As early as our ancestors started collecting amber at the Baltic Sea
and skilful craftsmen started using primitive instruments to make
jewellery from it, the never ending story of amber in Lithuania began.
The colour of amber ranges from the most precious transparent yellow
through all other types of yellow to red. One can also find white
amber, which is sometimes called “royalâ€, light green and extremely
rare blue. It is hard to find two pieces of amber of identical colour.
One of the most amazing characteristics of amber is that it transmits
light in a number of unpredictable and unique ways. Based on the shape
and size of a piece as well as the amount of impurities it contains
amber breaks the rays of light differently. This is the characteristics
that jewellers value the most and try to preserve if not enhance while
processing it.
